Stanford University
Stanford, CA

CHALLENGE:

Stanford University was in need of a new football stadium because the 84-year-old facility had reached the end of its service life. University officials hoped that the construction schedule could be accelerated so that the football team would not have to play any home games elsewhere in the upcoming season. This posed an enormous challenge to the general contractor, giving him only 42 weeks to tear down the old stadium and construct a brand new one.

A rainy February was challenging as the concrete pour was delayed. Specifications called for a self-adhered bituthene membrane for the between-slab waterproofing for the concessions area, which would require 28 days for the concrete to dry before applying the membrane.

To keep up with the demanding schedule, though, the GC wanted the second concrete pour to take place only three days after the first layer of concrete was poured.

SOLUTION:

Waterproofing Associates was hired to do the job and eliminated 25 days from the construction schedule by switching from a bituthene membrane to TREMproof 250GC cold fluid-applied waterproofing membrane. A single component, modified polyurethane, moisture-curing, elastomeric waterproofing membrane, TREMproof 250GC can be applied to “green” or damp concrete and cures within 24 hours.

Once the concrete was poured, Waterproofing Associates waited three days and then rolled out the first coat of TREMproof 250GC. Being able to apply the waterproofing membrane to “green” concrete was key to the GC meeting his deadline. Despite having one of the wettest months in recorded history, the stadium was built and opening day was only pushed out one week.
